Walking the sparkling gypsum dunes of White Sands is pure meditation.  The soft, cool sand absorbs all sound and transports you into a silent world of blue and dazzling white.  If you are prepared, a day wandering the dunes will leave you softened and will unknot the hardened, tight places in your soul.  But this is also a harsh environment, uncompromising, and it can be deadly.  These Spirit Beads were created in honor of that stunning place, and last weekend I spent two days carrying them with me as my son and I wandered for miles over the heart of the dunes.  When we stopped to rest, I took the beads out of my pack and laid them on the sand, inviting the spirit of the place to infuse them with its tranquility.  It is not often that I can do this, so this is a very special set.

Spirit Beads are for prayer, meditation, ceremony, and present-moment mindfulness practice. You are invited to enter into a living relationship with them, one which will become richer and deeper over time.  They are made to give you something physical to touch and hold as a reminder of the presence of Spirit in daily life...everywhere, and in everything.  I tend to use mine for centering, to calm me and still my mind.  This set has the added energy of its powerful connection to place, and many of the stones used have a soothing effect.  What I love about all Spirit Beads is that you are free to create your own way of using them.  This open-ended "shawl" style was originally created by contemporary prayer bead artisan Eleanor Wiley, who has traveled the world teaching others how to make and use their own prayer beads.  I will include an information sheet with this set that will give you some suggestions as to how to use them.

These Spirit Beads can work as a large ceremonial necklace, either open-ended or tied together with the beaded elk hide tie that is included with them, but they are primarily meant to be held in the hand.  They look lovely kept on your home altar, coffee table, nightstand or even hung on the wall...anyplace where they will invite you to pick them up, and easily come to hand.  I have several sets of Spirit Beads and keep them on my mannequin or on the wall so I can always see them.  They help bless and energize my workspace and home.

I chose elements and colors that seemed to embody White Sands.  The colors are bone white and soft, pale aqua, the aqua being a color that exists only in the dreaming of the sands, except when unusually heavy rains create small, jewel-like lakes between the dunes.  Then the aqua manifests itself.

The amulets on either end hang from rings of bone and antique New Guinea shell currency.  They include deer antler, an old bone tribal pendant from Nigeria, Australian opal, ancient Bactrian glass, and mastodon ivory.  I created one pendant out of polymer clay mixed with desert sand, including some grains from the white gypsum dunes.  Soft fibers of handwoven nettle and natural linen evoke weathered and windblown yucca leaves and roots.

The beads include many different shapes of Peruvian opal and aquamarine.  Several natural aquamarine crystals appear to have been softened by blowing sand.  There are pieces of Siberian mastodon ivory--creatures who, not so long ago, wandered the shores of the Ice Age lake where the dunes exist today.  Ancient quartz and glass beads from Asia keep company with carved stone scarabs, symbols of resurrection and renewal, from Egypt.   Fossil walrus ivory beads handmade on St. Lawrence Island, Alaska mingle with white shell, bone, and antler.  Ancient Bactrian glass, over 2000 years old, mixes with antique amulets of carved shell from Mauritania.  Boulder opal and white opal beads from Australia mix with Pre-Columbian shell and antique African trade beads.  And there are many more.

I construct Spirit Bead strands very carefully, knowing they are meant to be handled frequently.  They are strung on medium weight Beadalon 49 strand beading wire, which is durable and flexible.  Smaller spacer beads are between larger beads for ease of handling.  Beads with larger holes are lined with small glass seed beads to steady them on the strand.

This set also comes with its own handmade basket, woven from beargrass by the Tarahumara Indians of northern Mexico.  A separate tie of elkhide can be used to secure the strands when worn around the neck.

A unique offering...pure desert tranquility, bearing the essence of an extraordinary desert place.

SIZE: The strand measures 56" or 1.4 meters from end to end including the fringe.  When worn around your neck, it measures 28" or 71 cm from the back of your neck to the ends of the amulets.

CARE:  Because of the organic and ancient elements, handle this set with care.   Do not immerse this set in water as it could damage the ivory and antler elements.
