:: Golden Desert ::

This graceful ceremonial wand was a joy to make.  I began with a foundation of juniper wood from one of our own trees.  It was a small, dead branch that was still attached to the tree, but had dried and seasoned perfectly.  Several hours of intensive work were needed to strip the bark and refine the forked shape with a knife, then hand-sand it to an incredible silken surface that feels amazing to the touch.  I had originally intended to paint designs on the wood, but found it so beautiful as it was that no further decoration was needed:  an often-overlooked principle of good art is knowing when to stop.

Just above where you hold it, a dense cluster of ornaments wraps around the branch.  A base of wrapped and tied strips of golden tan deer hide is augmented by my own handmade yucca fiber cordage, and beaded wraps strung on linen and silk.  A cluster of feathers flutters alongside, made up of terra cotta, sienna brown and cream rooster and pheasant feathers, wrapped in linen cord.  The beads are Baltic amber, pipestone, and antique glass seed beads.  A huge, irregular, flat piece of vintage amber is the focal point, an amazing bead I've been saving for something special.  It swirls with cream in a golden brown matrix.

Three large pipestone beads are also attached directly to the branch.  I made these by hand from Utah pipestone, or argillite, which is a natural clay stone in a rich earthy red.  They were initially shaped on stones in the primitive manner but I finished them with hand-held polishing papers, which gave them a lustrous shine.  Many other Baltic amber beads in a glowing variety of hues wrap around the branch and hang down the side.  Amber is the most soothing, comforting, supportive, and centering "stone" I know, and its presence on a ceremonial piece is sure to bring its blessings to whatever you do.

I deliberately avoided having a "purpose" in mind for this piece, and concentrated instead on its form and the energy it embodies while making it.  It's up to you to choose its purpose and how it should be used.  You can display it by lying it on its side, propping it up, or hanging it on a wall.  If you want to hang it, I can provide an extra loop of deer hide to do that with--let me know.

SIZE:  The total length of the branch is 21 1/2" or 55cm.

CARE:   The wood is natural and unsealed, and so it will stain easily: be aware of that if you are using the wand in ceremony.  The feathers should not get wet, but if they do you can hold them over the steaming spout of a teakettle on the boil and the steam will help restore them.  If the wand is not moved frequently (such as hanging on a wall) I highly recommend that you spray it with a few drops of cedar or palo santo oil shaken in water to keep moths at bay.  Wipe the beads clean with a soft, damp cloth to clean.  If dust accumulates in the crevices, the best option for cleaning is good old canned air.  Finally, this looks like the mother of all cat toys--be advised.

PRESENTATION:  This one will have to be wrapped and mailed in a cardboard mailing tube.  I will let you know what to expect once it's on its way.
