:: Artifact Bundles ::

Strangely compelling artifacts have emerged from desert caves deep in the canyon wilderness.  Wrapped bundles of fibers, hide, plant remnants.  Unidentifiable objects emanating a faint ritual aura.  Things unseen for hundreds or even thousands of years, waiting silently in the dust.  Many of them have now found their way to museums across the Southwest, where they lie under glass or in the dark stillness of archived storage.  Whenever I come upon these items I feel a bolt of energy run through me.  What are they?  Why were they made?  Sometimes we think we know.  Sometimes we are left with the mystery.

These earrings began with two fine silver pendants that I created from PMC, impressing the raw clay into the furrows of a corrugated Anasazi potsherd (the black one, visible in the fifth photo).  They were kiln-fired and given a rich, earthy patina.  My first idea of creating layered earrings with them evolved into bundles of desert elements, wrapped and held in place with distressed deer hide and my own handmade yucca cordage.  Within these bundles are fragments of weathered juniper wood and saguaro cactus ribs, sage twigs from Taos, and bits of dried yucca leaf: artifacts of the high and low desert.   Tucked among these are tiny needles of obsidian, extraordinary remnants of glaciers slowly grinding over sheets of volcanic glass.  They come from Oregon.  I included them because obsidian is a protector, a guardian spirit who accompanies the noble desert plants and deer energy within the bundles.

All of the elements were carefully sanded above and below, smoothed so they are not sharp or poky, even the obsidian.  I gathered and tied them together, daubed them with melted beeswax and then wrapped them with the leather strips and yucca cordage.  Creating the cordage is very laborious; I did it the ancestral way from narrowleaf yucca harvested from our own land.

Sterling ear wires were attached and wrapped with finer wire to firmly secure and stabilize the earrings into a solid unit.  I hammered the oxidized sterling on my anvil of desert rock for a primitive texture.

Truly one-of-a-kind.  They look amazing when you have them on.

SIZE:  The main earrings with bundles are roughly 3 3/8" or 186mm long; the leather fringe hangs a bit below that, 3/4" or 19mm at the most.

CARE:   Simply wipe with a soft, damp cloth to clean.  Allow the silver's patina to deepen and grow richer over time.
