:: Farview Light ::

Named for the golden, slanting light at Farview Ruin on Mesa Verde, these earrings are lovely for the luminous days of Autumn.

I had set out to make a pair of amber earrings and was contemplating how to put them together, when the design for these literally bloomed in my inner vision.  I quickly got my sketchbook and laid in a few lines to remember it by, and then went to work.  It's rare anymore that I sketch anything out before I make it, but the profile of these earrings was so striking that I wanted to be sure to remember it.  The 20 gauge oval loops at the top are actually very large ear wires, like hoop earrings, and they're open at one end, down near the wrapped wires.  To put them on, you just move the wire to one side--don't pull it open--and thread it through your ear.  You see the earrings edge-on when you wear them, and the wider view is to the side.  I tried them on and they work really well, and thanks to the amber are amazingly weightless for their size.

Large, flat beads of Baltic green amber predominate.  So-called "green amber"--the genuine stuff, that is--has a greenish cast to it when compared with most other amber.  These beads have a kind of olive-chartreuse aura to them that makes them less orange and more subtle, and it's just a lovely color.  They're crystal clear with some inclusions of ancient earth or plant matter.  The round amber beads look like little corn kernels, almost, and are a soft, subdued yellow ochre.  Fine linen threads hold earthy, multicolored amber chips, tiny shells from the Seri Indians of Mexico, pearls, Czech glass and metal beads.

All of the metal attachments are of very fine sterling silver wires, so fine that they were really used more as fibers than metal.  I hammered each length of wire and drew beads on many of the ends, then oxidized and hand finished the silver.  I took it very slowly when assembling them, and was as careful as I could be to ensure that there were no sharp ends or parts that catch on them.

Absolutely unique.  I love the ceremonial feel of these!

SIZE:  3 1/4" or 82 mm long; 1 1/4" or 32mm wide.

CARE:  These are delicate.  Take care when handling them to avoid distorting the finer wires.  To protect the amber, store them away from heat and light in their own pouch or box.  Wash them by rinsing in cool water without soap, and very gently blot with a soft towel to dry.

PRESENTATION: These earrings will come to you beautifully giftwrapped.  See the shop policies below for details.
