The mysterious T-shaped doorway of Pueblo Bonito in Chaco Canyon is known throughout the world, and it is a place I also know and love well.  T-doors occur throughout Anasazi territory all the way down into Mexico, but no one remembers what they were for...or if they do remember, they're not telling.  I have even seen photographs of one in Peru.  Pueblo Bonito is at the center of a vast network of ancient sites that are aligned to the cycles of the heavens and to one another.  The elegance and scale of this undertaking is stunning.  When I visit Chaco, it never feels complete unless I go to this beautiful doorway and pay my respects to the ancestors.

Last August I took some fine silver metal clay (PMC) with me, and I impressed a long, heavy piece of it onto the upper left hand lintel above the doorway, visible in the last picture.  This did not affect the stone as the clay leaves no residue. It was dried in the sun and carefully taken home where it was fired, creating a solid silver talisman that is a fingerprint of the ancestral architecture.  It is a very special piece.

I placed this talisman on the end of a linked pendant assemblage made with heavy, hammered sterling silver wire.  A large fossil crinoid, a prehistoric sea creature, is on the lower link; the golden sandstone of Chaco was itself once a seabed and I have seen many fossilized shrimp burrows on top of the cliffs.  Elements are stacked on the link above, including antique/ancient quartzite beads excavated in Africa, an African bone disc, Precolumbian shell beads from Colombia, and a fine silver ring that I impressed on an organ pipe cactus skeleton.

The chain is unusual, made with hammered sterling links of different dimensions, gently oxidized and buffed to a matte finish like the pendant below.

A beautiful evocation of the ancient ancestors and the sun-bright desert landscape they lived in.

SIZE:  The entire pendant assemblage measures 5 1/2" or 139mm.  The necklace with pendant measures 17 3/4" or 45cm, from the back of your neck to the base of the pendant when worn.

CARE:  You may rinse this in cool water to clean.  Gently blot dry.

PRESENTATION: This necklace will come to you beautifully giftwrapped.  See my shop policies below for details.
