Like an October sunset in the Four Corners...this primitive necklace captures the red light of late sun slanting across red rock mesas and windblown sage.  The warm glow of the days will all too soon give way to the sharp chill of winter, but it will linger in the fiery hues here.

The focal point for the pendant is solid copper, molded from a sprig of Mesa Verde sage, which grew near Farview Ruins on the mesa top.  Sage has been used for uncounted centuries here as a medicinal and purifying plant, and the detail of the leaves is reproduced in stunning detail.  I've given the copper a warm, glowing patina and a soft finish.  At the top of the cairn is another copper piece, a crushed ring that was molded from Hovenweep mesa sandstone near the ruins that bear that name.  Hovenweep is a wild, austere and enigmatic place, and this little ring carries some of that energy.

Between the two is a stack of beads.  The large red bead is polymer that was colored with natural Southwestern red earth pigment, including hematite I found years ago near Palatki ruins west of Sedona, Arizona.  Below it are three pieces of fossil walrus ivory, artifact fragments from St. Lawrence Island, Alaska.  A quartzite bead from Africa is at the bottom; this is very old, perhaps ancient, and has picked up a reddish hue from long burial in the Sahara.  Greek copper-clad ceramic beads are sandwiched between.

The strand is almost entirely copper beads of various shapes and sizes, mostly seed beads, some African and Greek copper, and a couple of tiny copper beads that I made, molded from weathered Cabezon Peak juniper.  There are also coppery pearls, sherry-red hessonite garnet, and beads and chips of fossil dinosaur bone from the Southwest.  Together they make a warm and inviting mix.  I used professional grade beading wire to string the piece.

As with most of my necklaces, this piece can stand alone or you can layer it with others to suit your mood.  It is very durable and you can wear it anywhere.

SIZE:  The pendant assemblage measures 5" x 1 1/8" x 1", or 127mm x 29mm x 25mm.  The necklace with pendant measures 21 3/4" or 55cm, from the back of your neck to the end of the pendant when worn.

CARE:   Simply rinse in cool water after you wear it, and gently blot dry with a towel.  No polish should be used; allow the patina to deepen on its own.

PRESENTATION:  This necklace will come to you beautifully giftwrapped.  See my shop policies below for details.
