Holding a fossil allows one to enter into a contemplation of deep time.  We become so immersed in the ambient noise--and there is a lot of it--of our human world that we forget the tremendous expanse of time that lies behind it.  Our planet has seen ages upon ages of life that would be unimaginable to us, so much so that we would not even recognize it as our own Earth.  Perhaps that's why I am so drawn to fossils.  They represent the tremendous scale that we exist within, yet are oblivious to for most of our lives.  I think it's good to step away from the noise of the modern world, especially now, so we can catch our breath and remember what's truly important in the long run.

These Spirit Beads are perfect for that, for they are full of fossil energy: from the dinosaurs, to the ancient tree sap that fossilized into amber, to our remote human past.  They also have a few other surprises thrown in...

About Spirit Beads:

I have been making Spirit Beads for over a decade now, and they remain one of my favorite things to do. These oversize hand-held strands are created for prayer, meditation, ceremony, and present-moment mindfulness practice. You're invited to enter into a living relationship with them, one which will become richer and deeper over time. They're made to give you something physical to touch and hold as a reminder of the presence of Spirit in daily life...everywhere, and in everything. I tend to use mine for centering, to calm me and still my mind. What I love about Spirit Beads is that you are free to create your own way of using them, any way you choose. This open-ended "shawl" style was originally created by contemporary prayer bead artisan Eleanor Wiley, who traveled the world teaching others how to make and use their own prayer beads. I will include an information sheet with this set that will give you some suggestions as to how to use them.

These Spirit Beads can work as a large, open-ended ceremonial necklace, but they are primarily meant to be held in the hand. They look lovely kept on your home altar, coffee table, nightstand or even hung on the wall...anyplace where they will invite you to pick them up, and easily come to hand. I have several sets of Spirit Beads and keep them on my mannequin or on the walls so I can always see them. They help bless and energize my workspace and home.

The Amulets:

On each end there is a large artifact fragment made of fossil walrus ivory.  These were excavated from ancestral village sites by the native Yupik from their home on St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, and they are hundreds to thousands of years old.  The ivory was polished to bring out the incomparable richness of its patina.  A long piece of matte brown mastodon ivory is with them, which was shaped by Gary Wilson of Tucson, Arizona.  This came from Siberia.  A small brown fossil seal or walrus tooth is also from St. Lawrence Island.

For the first time, I am using a flintknapped stone point by a very talented knapper in Albuquerque, NM, who I only know as Matt since I keep forgetting to ask him his last name!  I've been trying to learn this art but so far without much success, but what I have gained is a great respect for the people who can do it well.  Matt is one of these.  This is a Clovis-type point made from Pedernales chert, which would have been used over 10,000 years ago to hunt the mammoths, camels, bison, and other megafauna that have long since disappeared from our landscape.

The stone slab with the pebbled texture is fossil dinosaur eggshell, and the disc is fine silver PMC which I have impressed with a fossil ammonite prior to firing.  All of the amulets hang from sterling, brass, bronze or copper wires attached to old copper and bronze rings from west Africa.

The Beads:

Nearly half of these are fossil material, and they include many pieces of Baltic brown, green, white and raw amber, crinoid, dinosaur bone, fragments of brachiopod shells, stegodon bone, shell bed fossil, and fish vertebrae.  One of these vertebrae is a stunningly intricate specimen with fractal-like structures...see the closeup photo.  Two other fossils are tiny agatized turitella shells that have been drilled into beads by Gary Wilson; he also created the deep brown-and-buff chunky bead from fossil turtle shell.

Some unusual beads are also here, most noticeable of which is probably the enormous baroque pearl.  This is just an amazing looking thing and I included it to lighten the energy a bit, along with several other pearls.  I've included a very unusual and earthy Ethiopian opal that is full of green and red fire on one side--see the closeup shot in sunlight.  The elongated diamond-shaped agate bead is an ancient bead from south-central Asia.  There is also a rare 3-faced rudraksha seed here--probably an aesthetic non sequitur, but it wanted to come along.  These 3-faced seeds come from India, where they are very sacred. This type is traditionally believed to be good for depression, weakness, and to help burn up negative tendencies.  They are said to help you overcome and be successful in any situation.

You'll find many more beads on this strand, all listed in the description I will include with them.

SIZE: The strand measures 65" or 1.6 meters end to end.

CARE:  Because of the fossil bone, amber, organic, and ancient elements, handle this set with care.   Wipe the beads with a soft, damp cloth if you wish to clean them.
