The pendant here is Pre-Columbian shell from Colombia, and may be from the Tairona tribe.  I found the shape to be fascinating; it seems to be cut from the core of a conch or perhaps a very large bivalve, but it appears to be carved into the shape of a tooth.  It is pierced on one side and has a great deal of wear polish, with a substantial groove on the other, and may have been worn in an array of identical pieces, like teeth.  I've seen tribal art where carved shell becomes a symbolic stand-in for teeth, as in the hippopotamus teeth from Africa.  At any rate, this is a lovely and sculptural piece that hangs at an angle as a pierced tooth would.

The strand of beads is primarily made up of antique French steel cut beads.  These are a larger size than what you customarily see and they are a very beautiful shade of warm gold.  I purchased them on the original hank, meaning that they have never before been used...and have waited all these years to become a part of this necklace.

Accompanying these beads are some amazingly ancient shell tube beads from the Indus Valley that date to 4000-5000 BC.  They are in a remarkable state of preservation and are truly a treasure out of time.  Many tiny seed pearls are with them, as are a variety of silver seed beads, most of them from the Thai Hill Tribes.  At the juncture of the strand is a stack of disc beads, brass with one larger bronze disc that I made myself, with a desert stone texture.  On top of the stack is an antique carved shell amulet from Mauritania, the kind that the women there weave into elaborate hairdos, or incorporate into jewelry.

I have used nylon-covered stainless steel beading wire to string the necklace, which is very durable and is designed to withstand abrasion by metal beads, yet has a very soft and flexible drape.

A lovely and extraordinary piece, sure to be treasured!

SIZE:  The shell pendant measures 1 3/4" x 3/4" x 5/8", or 44mm x 19mm x 16mm.  The necklace with pendant measures 16 3/4", or 43cm, from the back of your neck to the end of the pendant when worn.

CARE:   Please respect the great age of these beads, and handle with care when not wearing.  Wipe with a soft, damp cloth to clean.
