I recently obtained a small cache of antique clay Quiché Maya spindle whorls.  They come from Guatemala and are between 200 to 700 years old, which means they are at least antiques, and may be old enough to be Pre-Columbian.  This one is made from buff micaceous clay with a darkened surface that appears to be smoke smudged from pit firing.  Incised striations run down the curved sides; the bottom is flat.  It is a quiet presence with its earthen combination of charcoal grey and buff.  Whose hands once held this, spinning cotton from ancient fields?

Above the whorl, which is strung on brass, several beads are stacked together in a small cairn.  The largest is a bronze disc made from metal clay, the last of the group I created onsite in the Sonoran Desert, impressing the unfired clay into the surface of a huge fallen saguaro cactus skeleton.  With it are beads of fossil walrus ivory from St. Lawrence Island, Alaska; a forged iron bead from Africa, and a brass bead.

On the strand, tiny seeds of brass alternate with tubes of Hawks Eye combined with Tiger Eye.  The colors in these beads read as brown from a distance, but as you examine them more closely you see that they are a blend of subtle indigo blue, gold, and even olive.  I chose them because they go so perfectly with the spindle whorl, and photographed them on a Homefrocks olive green silk shift because they look especially good on olive, as well as neutral earth tones.

They are accented with a perfect miniature pyritized fossil ammonite, a second forged iron bead, faceted smoky quartz, and brass.  The necklace is strung on professional grade beading wire.

SIZE:  The spindle whorl measures 1 1/4" x 5/8", or 32mm x 16mm.  The necklace with pendant measures 19" or 48cm, from the back of your neck to the end of the pendant when worn.

CARE:   Please respect the great age of the spindle whorl and fossil ammonite, and handle with care when not wearing.  Wipe with a soft, damp cloth to clean.

PRESENTATION:  This necklace will come to you beautifully giftwrapped.  See my shop policies below for details.
