An entirely handmade work in stone and silver, this necklace unfolded over a span of several days.  It is a timeless piece made of stone and winterlight, combining strong lines with the subtle tonality of the high desert.  These elemental silvers and light earthy neutrals will effortlessly transit through all seasons and times of day, and would look stunning with linen or other natural fibers.

This cabochon is an intricate landscape of marcasite in a flowing matrix of translucent agate.  As you can see from the photos, the marcasite looks very similar to the metallic silver-gold of iron pyrite, but with an incredible lacelike fractured texture.  The more I looked at this stone, the more I became fascinated with its details.  Gary Wilson of Tucson made the cab.

I set the stone in a substantial bezel of solid sterling silver which became a landscape in itself, surrounded with sculptural accents of heat textured silver.  The large bail was also heat textured.  While working I often deliberately use too much solder just to see what it does, and on the back it produced some rather interesting landscapes in its own right which I left in place.  The silverwork was given an soft patina and was finished and polished completely by hand--unlike most creators of jewelry, I use no machines to finish my work, only various sanding pads, papers, polishing cloths, combined with time and elbow grease.  Even though this takes extra effort, in my eyes it puts more life into a piece, helping it to breathe and emit its own unique sound.  This one ended up with a much brighter polish than most of my work, which was what the marcasite seemed happiest with.

The chain was another journey, one that took three days.  It is handwoven, not on a jig as most are, but done freehand using only an awl and pliers to make each individual loop.  The resulting chain has small variations and idiosyncrasies that give it a more organic appearance.  Yes, it takes forever, which is why you don't see me doing these often, but I think it's worth it.  I finished this chain with sterling spring end terminals and hook which were hammered on desert rock for texture.

A nice feature of this piece is that you can remove the chain and put the pendant on something else or use the chain for another pendant, giving you any number of options.

Like a walk through a desert landscape...

SIZE: The silver chain including the hook measures 19" or 48.5cm from end to end. The pendant measures 1 7/8" x 1 3/4" x 1/4", or 48mm x 42mm x 8mm.

CARE: Wash with mild soap and water to clean...doing this regularly will help prevent darkening of the patina. The metal may be polished with a silver polishing cloth to brighten.
