:: Ancient Days ::

This is the most elaborate prehistoric-style necklace I've made to date.  With a total of fourteen stone-ground turquoise tabs and a hand-stitched deerhide cord, it was a labor of love, taking several days to complete.  What I find most compelling about prehistoric jewelry is the organic, primal quality of its natural forms and irregular lines.  To me, these pieces have a life and immediacy that feels more human and compelling than mass-produced jewelry.  The process of recreating old pieces is far more labor intensive, but the work takes on a meditative quality and there is a completely different energy in the studio when I do it.

To the ancients, turquoise was a highly prized gem that meant water, the blue of the sky, and the green of Mother Earth.  Today Native people (and not a few non-Natives) consider it to be a protective talisman that brings blessings to the wearer.  I imagine that it was looked upon the same way in the past.

The turquoise tabs are like countless others found across the ancient Southwest.  Natural nuggets of raw turquoise from Kingman, Arizona alternate with ones from Carico Lake, Nevada; the bluer ones are Kingman and those from Nevada are more green.  Each was slowly shaped and smoothed on blocks of sandstone from the Mesa Verde region and then polished on brain tanned elkhide and cotton cloth.  I wish I could say I drilled each one by hand, but I didn't have my pump drill when I made this, so I decided to drill them mechanically to prevent breakage.  Then I widened each hole in front and back with a handheld twist drill to give them the look of stone-drilled pieces.

The cord is made from commercial buff deerhide that is very soft.  I stitched it together with tiny blanket stitches, using fine nylon thread, and wrapped and attached the loop and turquoise toggle with it also.  The tabs in front are attached with mock sinew, made from waxed nylon.

The colors are soft and very appealing, pure desert, and the crescent of turquoise looks just beautiful when worn.  This necklace is new but it has an old, gentle soul...lovely, peaceful, and calming.

SIZE:  This is an 18" or 46cm necklace when worn, measured end to end.  The center turquoise pendant measures 7/8" x 9/16" x 1/8", or 22mm x 14mm x 4mm.

CARE:  When not wearing this, handle with care.  This is soft, untreated turquoise and is easily broken.  The entire piece with cord can be rinsed in water to clean.  Do not use anything on the cord as cleaning products can discolor the turquoise.
