As with all of my work, the elements in this pendant came together intuitively, and it turned into a talisman bundle that I just love.  All of the hues in this piece are warm and earthy except for the abalone which provides a beautiful contrast.  The theme of ancient lifeways combined with a Desert Primitive style makes this a striking piece.

A massive fused fine silver ring, hammered on desert rock, anchors all of the talismans.  The first piece I chose was a flintknapped point by Matt Lewis of Albuquerque.  Matt makes his living creating gorgeous knapped points from a variety of local stones as well as those from more distant sources.  This one was made from Rio Puerco Chert and comes from the West Mesa near Albuquerque, and it is a Clovis or paleo point, the kind which ancient hunters used here over 13,000 year ago to hunt mammoths, camels, and other large mammals.  (Yes, camels actually originated here in the Americas!).  Making a stone point like this is a very challenging skill to master.  It is wrapped securely in sterling silver wire.

To its left is a large abalone pendant that I made using prehistoric Southwestern techniques.  First the piece was cut from the shell using a flint blade, then it was shaped and refined on a series of sandstone blocks that I picked up near Mesa Verde in Colorado.  It was drilled with a stone-tipped pump drill and polished on brain tanned elk hide and cotton.

The slender fine silver stick pendant was molded on both sides from Split Rock granite.  I took the molds from enormous boulders in Joshua Tree National Park in California.  It is lightly oxidized and hand finished.  Next to it is another long stick of fossil walrus ivory.  This is a polished artifact fragment from St. Lawrence Island, Alaska; you can see the cut marks on the reverse.  I have no idea what it was used for.  The small bronze pendant was molded from the shed horn cover of a pronghorn, found on Otero Mesa in southern New Mexico.  All of the links are made from sterling silver which was hammered on desert rock, oxidized, and hand finished.

I made the cord from some very nice, soft linen yarn which was woven over nylon warps.  It is ornamented with a fossil ivory bead and joined with a smaller ring of fused fine silver.

This piece has a calm purity to it that is like a dream out of deep time.  It is grounding and has a strong soul, and it is also very comfortable to wear.  You'll fall in love with it from the start.

SIZE:  The pendant measures 5 1/2", or 14cm, in length.  The necklace with pendant measures 23 1/2", or 60cm, from the back of your neck to the end of the pendant when worn.

CARE:   To clean, rinse briefly in cool water and gently blot dry, or simply wipe very gently with a soft, damp cloth.  I almost always rinse my handwoven necklaces after wearing, especially in the summer, and have never had them discolor or look soiled.  The linen cord may be spot cleaned if necessary by soaking in a detergent made for delicate fabric.  I don't recommend soaking the pendant portion beyond a brief rinse.  Stubborn stains can be removed with a spot remover.  Regardless of the method, do not scrub the cord to prevent damage.
