This spectacular pendant is a very large antique bone Quiche Maya jachabal or achbal, a corn-husking tool from Guatemala.  This piece is post-European contact and may be hundreds of years old, highly polished with the kind of patina that only time and use can give.  It is in its original state and the tip is still quite sharp but I did not want to alter this antique in any way; however, if you prefer I can grind it down slightly.  The color of this piece is truly gorgeous, a warm brown brought out by the pearls in the strand above.

The jachabal is threaded on tiny antique French steel cut metal beads, with a stacked series of elements aligned above it.  A beautiful fragment of fossil walrus ivory comes first, from St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, with an old African glass trade bead below.  Atop these is a fine silver bead I created from metal clay, bearing the spiral impression of a fossil ammonite.  The large golden bead is quartz and comes from Mali or Niger in Africa.  Dating at least to the 1500s (it may be much older), it was most likely mined and made in India, and traded to Africa.  The elements in the stack with larger holes have been carefully lined with glass seed beads to stabilize them and keep them in alignment.

Beautiful bronze freshwater pearls alternate with antique French steel cut beads and brass seed beads on the silk strand.  These are accented with a marvellous bead made from a tiny, rolled up fossil trilobite, a piece of polished Arizona petrified wood from the Chinle Formation, bone, Thai Hill Tribe fine silver, brass, antique Burmese silver, and a larger pearl.

It is a lovely, graceful piece but also primitive, tribal and dynamic.  It's a piece that evokes the strength and dignity of womanhood and a woman's life-giving work of providing sustenance for her family.

SIZE:  The bone jachabal measures 6" x 1/2" x 1/4", or 155mm x 14mm x 7mm.  The necklace with pendant measures 22 1/2" or 57cm, from the back of your neck to the base of the pendant when worn.

CARE:  Use only a soft, damp cloth to clean the jachabal
