:: Ocotillo ::

The ocotillo is one of the stranger desert plants, an unruly collection of whipcord tentacles, bunched at the base.  When dormant, its spiny branches photosynthesize sunlight through its papery bark, but if there is a good rain it will quickly sprout thousands of small oval leaves.  In the spring, flamelike crimson blossoms erupt from the tips of the branches.  I am very fond of these remarkable beings.

On my winter desert rounds last year I spent a day around the Kofa Mountains in western Arizona.  These astounding volcanic peaks seem to embody the ferocious exuberance of the desert--be sure to click on the panorama to enlarge it and you will see what I mean.  While roaming the bajada near the pinnacles I came upon an ocotillo with an especially beautiful texture on one of its branches, and I brought out my metal clays and molding compound and went to work.  The other landscape photo shows the lavender mold setting up on the branch.

This cuff bracelet was made in that mold, so it's a positive replica of the branch.  Unlike cast pieces, individually molded metal clay talismans are all highly unique, even though they may be made from the same mold.  The bracelet is made from bronze metal clay.  I never know just how something will look when I make things with metal clay and molds, and when this emerged from the kiln I had no idea how gorgeous it would turn out to be.  But after I had cleaned and finished it, I was just blown away by the dramatic swirls and textures so faithfully reproduced in the bronze.  It seemed like the strong, uncompromising, wild soul of the landscape was embodied in the piece.

There is no patina except that made by the firing process, so the color is a soft, rosy bronze that will grow richer over time.  The high spots are brought out to a subtle glow, just a hint brighter than matte, and enough to create some contrast.  All edges and surfaces are carefully smoothed with no rough or sharp areas against your skin.  Bronze is an extremely hard metal, so this bangle cannot be sized much at all.  But it will last forever.

SIZE:  The internal dimensions of the cuff are 2 3/8" x 1 7/8", or 60mm x 46mm.  The opening is 1 1/8" or 28mm.  This size can be increased or reduced just a little, but I would recommend that you have me do this for you; send me a message and let me know, and I'll see if it's possible.  The cuff itself is 7/8" or 23m wide.

CARE:  Even with a bit of flexibility to the metal, a cuff bracelet should not be bent as this will cause metal fatigue leading up to eventual breakage.  Other than that, this is a very durable piece that will only improve with age.  The patina will deepen over time.  You can buff it with a dry kitchen scrubbing pad...just like the bit that is stuck in the crevice in the next to the last photo, which has since been removed ;).  Wash with soap and water as desired.

PRESENTATION: This bracelet will come to you beautifully giftwrapped.  See the shop policies below for details.
