The deep texture of canyon country sandstone was my touchstone for this primitive silver cuff adorned with a single turquoise

:: North Rim ::

This week I am celebrating the 30th anniversary of the first journey I took to the Southwest.  My then-husband and I flew to Phoenix from the east coast, rented a car, and headed north.  Over the next two weeks we put over 2000 miles on that car as we journeyed through the canyon country of northern Arizona and southern Utah.  I can only say it was a life-changing event to finally walk the landscapes that for so many years had called me in my dreams.  One of the first places we went was the Grand Canyon, where I spent a breathless morning watching the sun rise from a rocky point on the south rim.  As I sat there my gaze was drawn far into the distance where the pale edge of the north rim met a turquoise sky.  When I created this cuff I was communing with that memory and the singing of desert rock and light.

I set out to create a smaller cuff that would be the type of thing you would reach for from day to day, easy to wear and live with.  A substantial all-sterling piece, I used heavy gauge silver for the cuff, which was deeply heat textured until the metal surface took on the appearance of stone.  This dance with fire and glowing-hot metal is an unpredictable process but I have fallen in love with the random warps, knobs and patterns that result.

And what better stone to represent the Southwest than turquoise?  The wearing of turquoise is an ancient tradition here; I chose a small oval cabochon with a very high profile to accent the cuff.  I purchase my turquoise from local suppliers, and this stone, which comes from the Pilot Mountain area of Nevada, is natural and untreated.  Since turquoise is a softer gemstone the high-walled bezel was given a very heavy backing, the same gauge as the cuff itself.  A single tab prong grips it on one side and a deeply heat textured sterling accent rests beside it.  The stone and accent sit off center to the side, and it looks great either way you wear it.

I finished the cuff carefully by hand--no power tools here--to remove the burs and sharp edges that result from the heat texturing process.  I then gave it a deep patina which was built up over several stages, and finally hand-buffed the high spots to a soft matte glow.

It's a great piece that feels very good and solid, sturdy and already broken-in.  When you wear a cuff it should ideally fit very closely to your arm and not rattle around overmuch.  This bracelet can be adjusted slightly but once you have it where you like it, I recommend you avoid bending the silver to prevent metal fatigue.  You can stack it with other bracelets as long as they do not knock against the turquoise.

SIZE:  The cuff itself is 1/2" or 13mm wide.  The internal dimensions of the cuff are 2 1/4" x 1 7/8", or 57mm x 47mm.  The opening is 1" or 25mm.  This size can be increased or reduced by opening the ends up to 1/2" or 12mm in either direction.

CARE:  Even with a bit of flexibility to the metal, a cuff bracelet should not be bent a lot as you put it on and take it off, as this will cause metal fatigue leading up to eventual breakage.  Other than that, this is a very durable piece that will only improve with age.  The patina will deepen over time.  You can buff it with a dry kitchen scrubbing pad to brighten it with a matte surface.  You can also polish it with a silver polishing cloth but that will produce a much shinier finish.

Natural turquoise should not come into contact with oils, soap, heavy lotions, sunblock and the like, as these will turn the color a darker green (actually a very lovely effect on older Navajo pieces).  You can wash this cuff, but use only cool water without soap and do not scrub the stone.
