I feel as if I've fallen into a bowlful of amber this past week, and some wonderful pieces have come of it.  Baltic amber is one of my favorite things in the world, but I only seem to be able to work with it in autumn.  It must be the golds: they echo the landscape of Northern New Mexico this time of year, which is full of sunflowers and snakeweed and rabbitbrush, all blooming in masses of gold...and making me sneeze.  On top of the Sandias, the aspens are turning gold as well, and the cottonwoods in the valley will soon follow.  The air itself seems golden.

I have a bead box full of golden amber.  When I open it, out floats a sweet resinous aroma like honey.  The other day as I was contemplating these gorgeous beads, it occurred to me to see if I could put them all together somehow into a necklace.  So out they all came and were deposited in little piles I could pick through as I worked.  One by one I chose and knotted each bead onto a mocha-colored silk cord.  Because there were so many varieties I had to ensure each bead "got along" with its neighbor and there were no jarring transitions, which took some time.

This is all genuine Baltic amber, natural and untreated except some of the clear ones which have been lightly heated to clarify and deepen their color.  They are all nuggets of some type, with a few very organic looking discs added in.  Most are very polished but some have more of a satiny luster or a matte finish, and a few are raw, straight out of the ground pieces.  The beads range from completely opaque to glass-clear, and the color range is equally extensive.  The lightest pieces are opaque cream "bone amber", which looks the way it does because of tiny gas bubbles trapped in the resin.  Then the palette goes from lemon yellow through all shades of gold, to green-gold "green amber", red-gold, and light brown.  They are all just beautiful to look at.

There's another reason I've been drawn to amber lately: it is the most soothing, comforting, supportive, and centering "stone" I know.  I don't have to tell you how chaotic the energy is in the "world of humans" right now, but when I put an amber necklace or two on, it feels like a warm, steadying hand has been draped over my shoulder.

This strand works two ways: you can wear it as an extra-long single strand, or you can double it for a shorter, richer necklace.  It weighs very little and...well, it just feels great to have on.

SIZE:  The total length of the strand is 45" or 1.14 meters.  Worn as a single strand, it measures 22 1/2" or 57cmfrom the back of your neck to the end, and when doubled it measures 11" or 28cm from the back of your neck to the bottom of the strand.  Please DO NOT knot the necklace when wearing.

CARE:   Amber is fossilized resin and Baltic amber is some the oldest and most durable.  To care for amber, store it away from excess heat and light, and away from harder jewelry that can scratch it.  Rinse in cool water without soap to clean and gently blot dry.  Avoid contact with oils, lotions or harsh chemicals.

PRESENTATION: This necklace will come to you beautifully giftwrapped.  See the shop policies below for details.
