This latest offering in my ongoing series of primitive charm bracelets may be my most complex yet: a double row of interconnected fine silver links, and bronze and silver elements. Making a bracelet like this is a journey in itself. I have no plan, I just start making links and then joining them together in a very organic, free-flowing process. Using gauges of fine silver from heavy to light, I fuse, shape and hammer each link one at a time on a block of hard sandstone I found here in New Mexico. Each one is hand sanded, oxidized and finished in a labor-intensive process. They look rough, but are wonderfully satiny to the touch.

I kept adding more and more links to this bracelet, with three metal clay elements worked in. The large disc is bronze and was molded from a pronghorn’s shed horn cover from Otero Mesa in New Mexico. The small ring is fine silver and was impressed with a crinoid fossil. The third ring is bronze and was created onsite at Saguaro National Park West in Arizona, where I perched high above the desert floor and pressed the raw clay into a granite outcrop.

A cluster of talismans hangs from one end. These include two ancient ivory teeth, either seal or walrus, excavated on St. Lawrence Island, Alaska. They have been polished to bring out their beautiful and subtle patina. With these is a large bronze charm that was impressed on a trigonic quartz crystal, an ancient agate bead from Africa, and a fossil brachiopod shell from primordial seas. These are all attached with sterling silver.

The bracelet fastens with a hook and is designed so that the charms act as a counterweight that prevents the bracelet from shifting on your arm. You can fasten it onto one or more of any of the links above for a perfect fit.

This is a bracelet to remind you of landscape, the granite and sandstone bones of the earth. It is a primal connection to deep time and our recent and ancient past, both on a human scale and on the far vaster geologic scale of the Earth. The primitive and elemental beauty evoked is deeply nourishing and grounding, a comfort in changing times.

SIZE:  Maximum length is 8 1/2”, and you can wear it shorter by attaching the hook to the link of your choice. You can find the size of your wrist with measuring tape. If you don’t have tape, simply encircle your wrist with a strip of paper, mark the length, and then lay it flat next to a ruler to find your measurement.

CARE: Rinse in cool water to clean. Do not soak. Gently blot dry with a soft towel. The patina on the metal elements will grow richer over time. If you would like to brighten them, gently buff with a dry kitchen scrubbing pad or steel wool to bring out the high spots.

PRESENTATION: This bracelet will come to you beautifully giftwrapped. See the shop policies below for details.
